Episode 42 – 100% BELIEF is not compulsory – it just adds fuel to the fire
Description
100% belief in your goal and in yourself is great when it comes to going after your goals in life and business. But today I make it clear that not only is it not compulsory to achieving your goals, you can still get there without it.
I talk about my big podcast goal for February – hitting it and what position I would have been in had I not used the other tools in my arsenal to make sure I hit that goal.
Then I give you 5 easy actionable steps to aid you when going after you goals – no matter how big or scary they are.
Shownotes
Good morning, everyone. How are you this morning?
So I wanted to talk to you today about the belief in your goals.
So I’ve mentioned on here before, that I had an impossible goal set for me to achieve – that was directly related to this podcast.
It was essentially to achieve 4000 downloads – and within 2 months, really. It was given to me with a timeframe of 3 months to do it in but I hadn’t even launched the podcast at that point, so it really seemed crazy. Impossible.
And I did it. I achieved that goal – about 2 days before the deadline – we hit it. Which was absolutely amazing – thank you to all of you who were supporting me with it and downloading and listening.
And I wanted to share a little bit about how that happened. Because there are two messages that I see going around, particularly in the mindset space…
That might be throwing you off track from hitting your goals – if you take them as gospel.
The first is that 100% belief in your goal, is necessary in order to hit it, or even get started. And doubt is not ok.
And the second is that if you make a plan to achieve your goal, and you take action on that plan and follow it to the letter, then you will hit your goal.
So let’s talk about the first.
So sometimes we think that unless we can see that something is doable, achievable, possible – we won’t be able to get ourselves on board to take action towards it.
Or if we are able, that it will be with this kind of defeated energy, that won’t help us achieve it.
And that simply isn’t true.
It actually just requires a decision to be made. That you are committing to it – even if it isn’t possible.
In the context of my goal.
This goal was set for me as an impossible goal for a reason. That number was ridiculously large. I had a very small audience of people. I am not an influencer. I do not have special contacts who were going to help me.
It was picked for that reason.
And so how could I have believed that it was 100% likely to happen?
It would have been very challenging for me to do that. So when I started out, I simply made that decision for myself to commit to go all in for that goal.
I would give it my best shot. And see how far I could get.
That is all it took in order for me to start taking action.
I couldn’t have worked backwards from the goal to see exactly how it was going to happen, because it didn’t seem at all like it was going to happen, so I didn’t waste any time overthinking or overplanning, before I got started.
And this is what I think some of you need to do.
Just get started.
Some of you are already fast messy random action takers – and so this advice isn’t what I would give you.
But if you are overthinking everything.
And thinking that your doubts are a problem.
And thinking they have to be gone and you need to be in full belief that it’s going to work, then you need to just start taking action.
Because once you do, then you start to get information.
Data.
That you can then work with to make adjustments
I hate to break it to you, but if you are waiting for all your doubts to be eliminated before you get going, you will never get off the start line.
I can’t remember if it was Elizabeth Gilbert who said this or someone else, but “doubt can come with you as your pursue your goals, it can ride with you in the back seat, we just don’t want to allow it to drive the car”.
I had doubts all the way throughout this podcast download goal. One day I would be dancing with the possibility that it might happen and getting on board with believing, and then the next – I was doubting it all over again.
And I still carried on taking action. And I hit my goal.
Proof that you don’t need 100% belief all of the time.
And because I had the momentum going from taking action, even without full belief, when I did have moments of full belief – it was like adding fuel to the fire. Adding more creativity and energy into the plan.
And that leads me to the next message – which is that if you make a plan to achieve your goal, and you take action on that plan and follow it to the letter, then you will hit your goal.
I think we have to remember that no matter how good we are at planning, and even executing on our plans, we are still human. Not robots. And there are many variables involved in the process of goal achievement.
And if we treat the process as a static one, rather than a living breathing process that we need to nurture and respond to, we are likely setting ourselves up to fail.
In my process for the podcast, the plan was to release 11 episodes over the 10 weeks after I had launched it, and then promote it on the various social media channels and a couple of other podcasts.
No matter how hard I had believed it was going to work, if I had stuck to that original plan, there would have been no way we would have hit the download figures.
Having taken action initially was the key part to me having the data (if I had still been waiting for me to fully believe it was going to work first, I wouldn’t have had that data to have been able to make the much-needed adjustments to the plan – which was to release another 26 episodes, which is what got me to the goal).
But if I had thought that having the plan and executing on it was all I needed, then I wouldn’t have hit the goal.
So hopefully, with this new perspective, you can now choose to disregard those messages – if they have been in your head and getting in your way to moving towards and achieving your goals. And instead instil the following 5 steps into your goal achievement process…
- Commit to pursuing the goal and getting as far as you can. (Imagine athletes not going after their dreams because they aren’t 100% in full belief that they will win a gold medal)
- Start taking action
- Evaluate the process and make adjustments based on data
- Allow yourself to dance with the possibility that it might happen for you
- Let those moments of belief act as simply adding fuel to the fire
Best of luck lovelies.
See you next week.
